In 2022, the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in Art (ICMA) at the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași (UNAGE Iași), in collaboration with IOSUD – the Doctoral School of UNAGE Iași, published the volume The Post-Medium Condition: An Investigation into the Post-Medium Potential of Painting and Photography in Hybrid Artistic Practices (Condiția post-medială: o cercetare asupra potențialului post-medial al picturii și fotografiei în practici artistice hibride) by Sarah Muscalu, as part of the “Doctoral Research” Collection. The volume presents a study of the post-medium condition of contemporary art, investigating the relationship between painting, photography, and new media and examining how the interaction, hybridisation, and de-specification of artistic media generate new forms of artistic production and discourse.

The volume The Post-Medium Condition: An Investigation into the Post-Medium Potential of Painting and Photography in Hybrid Artistic Practices (Condiția post-medială: o cercetare asupra potențialului post-medial al picturii și fotografiei în practici artistice hibride) examines the transformations of artistic media in the context of the post-medium condition, focusing on the relationship between painting, photography, and new media. The study traces how digitalisation, de-specification, and hybridisation reshape the identity and functioning of these media, analysing processes of interaction, translation, and mutual contamination through which photography and painting move beyond traditional boundaries and generate intermedial and hybrid artistic forms.

Developed at the intersection of theoretical research and artistic practice, the publication combines historical and critical analyses of photography and painting with reflections on the post-medium condition, materiality, post-photography, post-painting, and digital rhetoric. The case studies and artistic projects incorporated into the research explore the relationship between the photographic and pictorial image, as well as the possibilities of a language that can no longer be attributed exclusively to a single medium. Through this approach, the volume provides a theoretical and methodological framework for understanding contemporary artistic practices situated at the boundaries between media and for investigating the post-medium potential of painting and photography.

The “Doctoral Research” Collection, initiated and coordinated by ICMA, promotes outstanding doctoral research undertaken within the Doctoral School of the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași. The collection focuses on research situated at the intersection of epistemic fields, artistic and theoretical research practices and methods, capable of producing original forms of knowledge and subtly transforming the disciplinary fields within which they operate.

The research published in this collection also seeks to contribute to the consolidation of an authoritative artistic terminology in Romanian, to mediate the contribution of contemporary art to the social sphere as a specific form of advanced multidisciplinary knowledge, and to demonstrate the capacity of theories of art and visuality to explain and critically address the complexity of modern and contemporary cultural manifestations.
