Affective Ecologies brings together artistic practices that unlearn inherited ways of seeing and sensing nature. In dialogue with T.J. Demos’s call to decolonize nature, the exhibition explores how art can move beyond extractive visualities toward relational, affective, and decolonial imaginaries. Each work destabilizes the epistemic frameworks through which modernity has separated nature from culture, image from body, matter from meaning.
Within post-socialist contexts, these gestures also confront what Madina Tlostanova calls the “coloniality of post-socialism,” where ecological and ideological transitions remain entangled with histories of domination and loss. The works inhabit a reflective space where memory and imagination become tools of reparation, opening a possibility for affective and ecological healing.
Through acts of counter-archiving, remembrance, and performative address, Affective Ecologies traces fragile alliances between human and nonhuman worlds, envisioning forms of coexistence grounded in care, vulnerability, and the affective labor of decolonial becoming.
Exhibition produced as part of the project History Happens Today: A Contemporary Reinterpretation of the Iași School of Painting from the Collection of the Nicolae ‘Gane Museum’, organised by the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design and co-funded by the Municipality of Iași. Project director: Professor Cristian Nae.
