In 2022, the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in Art (ICMA) at the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași (UNAGE Iași), in collaboration with IOSUD – the Doctoral School of UNAGE Iași, published the volume Film Music: Codes, Conventions, and Stylistic Intersections (Muzica de film: coduri, convenții și interferențe stilistice) by Emanuela-Izabela Vieriu, as part of the “Doctoral Research” Collection. The volume presents an extensive study of film music, examining its role in cinematic construction and investigating the codes, conventions, and stylistic intersections that define the language of the film score in relation to different cinematic genres.

The volume Film Music: Codes, Conventions, and Stylistic Intersections (Muzica de film: coduri, convenții și interferențe stilistice) examines the role of music in cinematic construction, tracing the development of the film score and its relationship to image, narrative, and the principal film genres. The study analyses the musical conventions and codes associated with cinematic categories such as science fiction, fantasy, western, drama, action, adventure, comedy, and thriller, highlighting how compositional language, orchestration, rhythm, timbre, and stylistic intersections contribute to shaping the sonic identity of a film.

Structured from historical, aesthetic, and compositional perspectives, the publication combines analyses of representative films with reflections on the process of composing film music and on the relationship between the director’s vision and the composer’s style. The study also includes an applied analysis of the film score composed for Paradise Now (2005), which serves to explore aspects of compositional language and construction in greater depth. Through this approach, the volume contributes to the systematisation of concepts, conventions, and practices in film music and provides a useful framework for research and compositional practice in the audiovisual field.

The “Doctoral Research” Collection, initiated and coordinated by ICMA, promotes outstanding doctoral research undertaken within the Doctoral School of the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași. The collection focuses on research situated at the intersection of epistemic fields, artistic and theoretical research practices and methods, capable of producing original forms of knowledge and subtly transforming the disciplinary fields within which they operate.

The research published in this collection also seeks to contribute to the consolidation of an authoritative artistic terminology in Romanian, to mediate the contribution of contemporary art to the social sphere as a specific form of advanced multidisciplinary knowledge, and to demonstrate the capacity of theories of art and visuality to explain and critically address the complexity of modern and contemporary cultural manifestations.
