In 2022, the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in Art (ICMA) at the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași (UNAGE Iași), in collaboration with IOSUD – the Doctoral School of UNAGE Iași, published the volume Stage Designers of Iași Theatre in the Twentieth Century (Scenografi ai teatrului ieșean în secolul XX) by Alina Dincă Pușcașu, as part of the “Doctoral Research” Collection. The volume presents an extensive study of the development of scenography in Iași, tracing the work and contributions of the stage designers who shaped the city’s theatrical landscape throughout the twentieth century in relation to the aesthetic, cultural, and technical transformations of the theatrical arts.

The volume Stage Designers of Iași Theatre in the Twentieth Century (Scenografi ai teatrului ieșean în secolul XX) examines the development of scenography in Iași and the role of the practitioners who contributed to shaping the city’s theatrical image, with particular attention to the “Vasile Alecsandri” National Theatre in Iași. Beginning with the origins of local scenography in the nineteenth century and focusing on the transformations that took place throughout the twentieth century, the study traces the development of set design, costume, and the visual language of the stage in relation to the aesthetic, cultural, social, and political changes of the respective periods.

Drawing on research into archival documents, museum collections, theatre reviews, photographic and video materials, as well as testimonies and interviews with figures from the theatrical world, the publication reconstructs the contributions of successive generations of stage designers and highlights the influences and interconnections between the Iași theatre scene and developments in Romanian and European theatre. Beyond recovering an insufficiently documented history, the study offers a systematic perspective on scenography in Iași and its role in the development of Romanian theatrical culture.

The “Doctoral Research” Collection, initiated and coordinated by ICMA, promotes outstanding doctoral research undertaken within the Doctoral School of the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași. The collection focuses on research situated at the intersection of epistemic fields, artistic and theoretical research practices and methods, capable of producing original forms of knowledge and subtly transforming the disciplinary fields within which they operate.

The research published in this collection also seeks to contribute to the consolidation of an authoritative artistic terminology in Romanian, to mediate the contribution of contemporary art to the social sphere as a specific form of advanced multidisciplinary knowledge, and to demonstrate the capacity of theories of art and visuality to explain and critically address the complexity of modern and contemporary cultural manifestations.
