A project of [CATEDRA] the Centre for Research in Photography and Media Art at the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași (UNAGE Iași)

The exhibition project Unstable Images is the first activity of the experimental artistic platform of the Centre for Research in Photography and Media Art [CATEDRA], marking the beginning of a series of exhibition, discursive, and publishing initiatives supported by the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in Art (ICMA) at the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași (UNAGE Iași).
The selection of works presents a broad spectrum of artistic forms, processes, and practices: holographic objects that [re]materialise through the act of viewing; post-performative 3D prints transformed into sculptural objects; video installations and installation-based objects integrated with sound and light; AI projects constructed through media-data processing algorithms; and sensor-assisted video streams. Each work functions as a material demonstration of instability – through its modes of generation, through the technical processes that sustain it, and through the precariousness or volatility of its meaning. By bringing together works, methods, and fields of practice that differ from one another, the exhibition project advances a clear proposition: instability is not a weakness of the contemporary image, but its fundamental condition of existence. Today, the image becomes a process, an ecology of relations, data, materialities, and contexts in constant reformulation. In this sense, instability should not be stabilised or “resolved”, but understood as a driver of artistic innovation, an instrument of research, and a resource for reinventing the ways in which we look at, produce, and interpret visuality.
