Lucian Brumă • Within Image

The exhibition Within Image proposes an exploration of the image from within its own materiality, where representation unravels and becomes the ground for a plastic investigation of the visible. The works brought together in this exhibition project assume the image not as a window onto the world, but as a stratified, sedimentary space in which fragments of landscape, traces of a figure, lines of force, and geometric trajectories are absorbed, displaced, and reconfigured within the texture of painting. If we understand visual memory as constructed through absences, ruptures, and fragmentary recoveries, the works on display do not offer an image in the traditional sense, but rather a succession of layers that are simultaneously overwritten, erased, and reassembled.

The series explores the ways in which an image may be inhabited, traversed, and recirculated as visual material. The graphic interventions, geometric structures, or white grids function as instruments of cartography: they do not order space, but rather place it under tension, compelling it to reveal its invisible layers. These lines behave like traces of an internal analysis of the image, as though painting were attempting to expose its own mechanism, its own archive.

In all these painterly manifestations, the image does not constitute an end point, but rather an inquiry. In seeking what remains of the image within the context of such investigations, painting becomes a site in which the visible is endlessly recomposed, while the viewer is invited to enter “within the image” not as an observer, but as a participant in its process of formation. Within Image transforms the painted surface into a territory in which reading, looking, and perception are continually subjected to critical revision. In this way, the project proposes a reflection on the nature of the image in contemporaneity: an image that no longer reflects the world, but its own conditions of existence.
