Investigative Aesthetics in the Post-Truth Era
ElectroPutere Gallery, Craiova, in partnership with the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in Art (ICMA) at the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași (UNAGE Iași), organised, on 16 and 17 November 2022, within the framework of the project Investigative Aesthetics in the Post-Truth Era, two online discussions moderated by Cristian Nae, titled Politics of the Image, with Adrian Bojenoiu and Bogdan Ghiu, and Images of War: Visuality, Terror and Post-Truth, with Nazar Kozak.
Against the backdrop of the increasingly widespread use of satellite imagery, military maps, and images captured on mobile phones both as evidence and as instruments of disinformation at the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the discussions in this series examined the ontological status and political functions of the image in the context of the erosion of the documentary status of the photographic image and the unprecedented expansion of visualisation technologies, as well as the bio-psycho-political dimensions of the relationship between representation, simulacrum, and virtuality.
At the same time, the discussions addressed the ethical implications of the circulation of images of terror in television broadcasting and on social media platforms, the importance of communicating the invisible dimensions of war through oral testimony, the ways in which the image contributes to the formation of political subjectivity, and the epistemico-political relevance of contemporary visual art through the contribution of investigative aesthetics, which entail the multisensory reconstruction of an event from multiple sources.
Adrian Bojenoiu is a curator, cultural manager, and founder of ElectroPutere Gallery, where he directs a curatorial programme focused on the study of the image in contemporary art.
Bogdan Ghiu is a poet, media theorist, translator, translation theorist, and art critic.
Nazar Kozak is an art historian and researcher at the Institute of Art History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Lviv and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the College Art Association (USA).
Cristian Nae is a curator, art historian, Professor at the George Enescu National University of Arts, Iași, and Director of the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in Art (ICMA).
